(TA5.06) Is it possible to learn about open geospatial data platforms in 75 mins to Harness Non-Official Sources for the 2030 Agenda?
Organiser(s): GeoCensos Foundation
For the session organizers, the answer to the question of the title is YES. Following the lessons of the pandemic crisis, there is a great need for third party sources in order to speed up the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Trustworthiness and confidence among data users have demonstrated to be crucial. More than ever before, the so-called “global consensus on data” claims to be attained by articulating and walking the talk of valuable dialogues, and co-creation and cross-learning among parties proved to be the way forward. As the COVID-19 crisis unfolded, we learned about new ways to harness statistics produced by sources other than countries’ national statistical offices (NSOs) such as data produced by the private sector, civil society, academia, and other pioneer research institutions. Comprehensive, reliable, and readily available data coming from new sources for describing, monitoring and predicting unprecedented developments, accelerated digital transformation and data integration. In many cases, a short, timely analysis was more appreciated than larger studies. And granular, non-traditional sources helped to pinpoint emerging needs. Granular, open and readily available community data can aid not only in recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic crisis but also in pushing forward the implementation of 2030 Agenda. Grassroots’ communities are experts on how shocks affect them and innovative open sourced geospatial platforms can greatly help to reconcile the tension about ensuring that community data is high-quality. Many digital platforms that collate data from what communities deem as important, prove that different data sources can be used to track the SDG indicators. This session will be portraying in a practical way how to use open geospatial data and other related open-sourced digital tools. Previously, a targeted virtual call will be organized to bring together five different data communities in a relatively short period of time. At the same time, it will be creating awareness about the potential that data from different sources has for free re-use and unleashing its power by telling stories. Five civic technology (“civic tech”) groups will be enabled to use and re-use data and developments from open data and open software providers by co-creating and explaining attractive storytelling pieces.

Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.
The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.
By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.
