Mealybugs can be easily recognized by a white cotton-like wax coating, as a rule, they are clearly visible to the naked eye. Sugar secretions (honeydew) and soot fungus settling on it are the following symptoms of the lesion. Sucking the juices of young shoots, leaves, buds, worms strongly inhibit plant growth. The commonly encountered mealy mealybug also infects the root system.

Preventive Actions

Conducting a regular inspection for damage by a pest, especially in the off-season and on plants especially susceptible to damage by a vermilion, such as a croton, ficus, cacti, succulents, and some types of orchids. This pest is afraid of moisture, prefers dry conditions.

Keep clean, remove all dried leaves. Plants regularly washed with leaves are rarely affected by the worm.

Control Measures

It is easy to cope with a mild defeat. Use a soft brush or a cotton swab dipped in soapy water to clean the plant of worms and the white cotton-like secretions that they form, and then spray three times at intervals of 7-10 days with a solution of green soap (10-15 g per 1 liter of water), tobacco infusion, infusion of garlic or a decoction of cyclamen. A good effect is given to alcohol treatment or treatment with a pharmacy tincture of calendula.

In case of severe damage, in addition to manual destruction, spray with an interval of 7-14 days with one of the following preparations: Aktara, Calypso, Confidor, Mospilan, Fitoverm. You may have to try several different drugs and choose the most effective one.

Folk Remedies

  • Horsetail tincture: It is very good to water and sprays diseased plants with horsetail tincture. Horsetail is sold in pharmacies and is used as a diuretic, as a blood purifier, etc. The German name is Schachtelhalmtee.
  • Pancake week spraying agent: 1 liter of water is mixed with 2 tablespoons of olive oil, and then an emulsion is applied to the plant (best by spraying).
  • Alcohol solution with soap: Treatment of the plant with a mixture of 15 grams of liquid soap, 10 ml of denatured alcohol (Brennspiritus) and 1 liter of warm water can also be successful.
  • Tincture of garlic: Take 4-5 cloves of garlic in 0.5 liters of water. Water must be brought to a boil, and finely chop the garlic or squeeze. Then garlic must be poured with boiling water, and insist for at least four hours. The infusion is filtered and not diluted is applied with a brush to the leaves.
